Tips on Keeping Strong Enamel When You Have Braces

Posted .

It’s important to maintain strong tooth enamel regularly. This is because your enamel is the hard shells of your teeth that protect the inner layers. If you’re not careful, the enamel can soften and cause dental problems. So, it’s important to do what you can to maintain strong tooth enamel, especially when you have braces. To help you do so, our orthodontist, Dr. John Fleming, is happy to give you some tips.

First, have a tooth-friendly diet. You can do so by avoiding sugary and acidic foods. This is helpful because sugar and acid tend to attack the tooth enamel, wear it down, and cause cavities and enamel erosion. It’s best to stick to foods and drinks that contain calcium and strengthen the tooth enamel.

Second, avoid over brushing your smile. Brushing too fast, too hard, and too often can harm your tooth enamel, which might seem a bit odd, but it’s true. So, make sure to only brush after each meal and before bed as well as use soft, gentle brushing techniques and a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Third, use fluoride often. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help strengthen your tooth enamel. This is why you should expose your chompers to fluoride regularly. To do so, all you need to do is brush with fluoride toothpaste, rinse with fluoride mouthwash, drink fluoridated water, and receive a professional fluoride treatment every six months at your dental office.
